Self Assessment Esay
When I entered this class, I never thought I was going to have a problem writing. In this semester I also had Calculus, Physics and History. I admit it, Writing for Engineering was my hardest course. You are going to think that after all those years of writing in high school in my country and college here, I was going to do better, but unfortunately no. English as non my first language showed the results. The feedback that I got from my professor and the grades in this class really stressed me out and made me think I am not good enough, no matter how hard I tried. I also ask for a lot of help from my classmates and from tutoring center in school. I would reach out to the student who got a good grade, follow his way of writing the paper, but I still didn’t succeed. It was clear to me: I had to and I did focus on how to find ways in which I could improve my writing by using the course learning outcomes set by professor Rodwell.
Leadership Presentation was helpful to me to improve my writing skills on influencing my audience. What I liked about this assignment was that I got to share this with other students from my class. It got me nervous presenting in front of everyone, but after that I felt much more confident. This was one of my favorite assignments because I got to get a good comment from my professor. I tried hard to research and find the right words to put on the presentation. I missed one important slide with the purpose of the evidence in writing, but I covered that well in Q&A. I know now what to include in slides when presenting. Because of this assignment I learned how to construct a concise sentence for this task and how to talk clearly while being aware of the audience in front of me.
Lab Report Analysis was the most challenging assignment for me. Didn’t I cry while rewriting this. This was so much work to do and I understand it is nothing comparing to what waits for me when I go in “the real” world. Just like my professor always says: “Out there won’t even give you an explanation of what you received and why and how. This is something that I appreciate from my professor a lot. About this assignment, I had to read three different articles and do a lab report about the way how they are written. I spent so many hours on it. I feel terrible for not getting the grade I wished for. The peer review and the feedback form the classmates was very helpful. I realized what I had to do to finalize a great lab report. I didn’t go that way, but at least I can say that the lab report analysis essay really helped me develop my researching, summarizing, and editing abilities.
Technical Description was that assignment that for the first time didn’t make me feel I was lost. I knew what to do and where to start from, which for the most assignments I did not know. This assignment required major research on the product that you chose. It took a significant amount of time and effort, but I had a great learning experience. I had to use the school library, the Internet so I could find a reliable source and be able to sort out what is a good information to add on my paper and what is not. I also had to cite the sources properly when referenced in my essay. It is very interesting seeing that a writing can never be good enough. It will always need adding, revising and fixing parts. The revision of Technical Description helped me improve my research skills and helped me put everything together in one piece. Again, this one me thinking I did a great job. I don’t think I need to write again that I got a bad grade, but the outcome of learning how to write is great. It is important that I know now what to avoid and what to include in a Technical Description.
The proposal was a group project with 5 other classmates. This was a very fun and challenging assignment to do. It included two parts to finalize this assignment. The first part consisted of a similar work that we had to do in the Technical Description and the second one we had to put everything into a presentation that we made in front of the professor and other classmates. The real challenge of this assignment stays at the fact that we had to prove our growth during this entire course. We learned how to outline, how to revise, how to give feedback, how to be strict and concise and how to present. Not we gather all those elements together and we come up with a big idea as future engineering that we intend to be. Finding the idea was the hardest part. We had to brainstorm a lot and do extensive research. As they say, 6 minds in our case, is better than one. This assignment helped me grow even more in professional way. Working with others is not always easy, but while helping writing this proposal I am happy to say that I learned how to connect my experience presenting, to future presentations. I was able to establish and participate in group and also improve skills for authoring, rewriting, proofreading, including conscience.
